In 1866 the Township of Tehkummah was established, taking its name from a man named Louis Tekoma, who came here after the signing of the 1836 treaty made Manitoulin a native reserve for those loyal to the British. The present day village of Tehkummah, surrounded by softly rolling farmland, sits inland from the site of the original settlement at Michael’s Bay on the south shore. Michael’s Bay was the site of a highly successful sawmill which burned to the ground in 1914, along with the village itself. Visit the Little School House Museum in South Baymouth to learn more about Michael’s Bay, and its interesting cast of characters, and the history of Tehkummah Township.
