Nestled along the North Channel, Little Current is the point of entry for those traveling by road to Manitoulin Island. Formerly an independent town, and now part of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands (NEMI) it was named variously by different groups for the swift strong currents of water running between the narrow passageway which connects the North Channel and Georgian Bay. Located on the northeastern tip of Manitoulin, with a population of 1,500 the town—which is accessible by the famous swing bridge--boasts many motels, B&Bs, restaurants, grocery stores, banks, pharmacies, several retail stores, a hospital and a welcome centre. There is a public beach, as well as marinas, and several picnic areas. Little Current is also the location for the famous Haweater Weekend festival, which is held during the first long weekend in August, as well as Country Fest the following weekend. During this time the town is alive with activities and fun for the whole family. The town also includes the small communities of Cold Springs, Dinner Point Depot, Eads Bush, Green Bay, Honora, Rockville, Sheguiandah and Turner.
