De-ba-jeh-mu-jig Theatre Group

De-ba-jeh-mu-jig Theatre Group - known to friends and patrons as simply "Debaj" is Canada's oldest touring Aboriginal theatre company. Founded in 1984 by Sundance Institute alumnus and award-winning filmmaker Shirley Cheechoo, De-ba-jeh-mu-jig which means "storytellers" has provided a forum for storytelling from an Aboriginal perspective. Over the years, Debaj has cultivated a number of emerging Aboriginal playwrights, such as Tomson Highway and Drew Hayden Taylor, and provided a stage with which to tell their stories stories that were performed by Aboriginal youth for Aboriginal youth. Each summer Debaj offers a main stage production at the historic Mission Ruins in Wikwemikong from late July through mid-August.

Thursday Nights Are Astronomy Nights!

Every Thursday night in July and August, Gordon's Park offers a program that includes an orientation into astronomy, preview of astrophotography pictures, detailed review of astronomy posters on planets, northern lights and solar systems, as well as instructions on the use of a planisphere to find objects in the night sky. Participants willlearn how to star hop, view with the naked eye and have the opportunity to try Bausch & Lomb wide-angle binoculars and observe through the park's 8" Dobsonian telescope.

    "Walk A Fossil Reef" Sunday Afternoons

 Join us for an exciting & educational "Walk a Fossil Reef" every Sunday afternoon during July & August at Gordon's Park with palaeontologist and Algoma University professor, Sharron Valli.  Discover and see actual fossils on the reef including invertebrate corals [tabulates (colonial) and rugose (solitary)], stromatoporoids, bryozoans, and echinoderms (crinoids), mulluscs (nautiloids, bivalves, gastropods, cephalopods), brachiopods, echinoderms (crinoids) and MORE.  The park is located on Drumlin and is a featured stop in the University of Waterloo's book "Manitoulin Rocks".

    Moonlight Hike & Wolf Howl

 Gordon's Park Moonlight Hike & Wolf Howl includes calling for wolves an an educational guided nature hike with a focus on wolves and their habitat.  Participants will use Parabolic Ears and Bausch & Lomb binoculars to hunt for evidence of wolves, wolf tracks and other signs of wildlife.  A social wolf howling  competition around the campfire with really great "wolfy" prizes follows the hike.

    Drum Making Weekend

 Learn the technique and culture of traditional drum making over the course of two days with instructor Lori Sagle.  This weekend includes campsite accommodations (B&B, Tipi Tenting, Camping Cabins also available) and all the necessary materials to make your very own deerhide drum.  Additional package activities include access to the solar heated swimming pool, nature interpretive centre and educational hiking trails.

The Pioneer Museum in Mindemoya

In conjunction with Jack's Agricultural Museum is having a special PIONEER CRAFTS DAY on Thursday, July 16, 2009 with activities such as "Make your own bowl on the potter's wheel", "Make a Beeswax Candle", "Knit a Potholder", "Make Flowers out of Ribbons", and more.  There will be demonstrations of spinning, weaving and other crafts, pony rides, square dancing and more.

The Pioneer Museum is open Monday - Friday, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. throughout July and August in 2009.

    Stargazing Manitoulin

Excellent Star Party held in the RASC designated dark sky preserve at Gordon's Park with 360 degree viewing, no light pollution and the darkest skies in Ontario.  Activities include a Campfire Welcome Reception, Public Observing Sessions, Laser Guided Sky Tours, guest speakers, swap meet, show & tell session, Nature Interpretive Centre, Guided Fossil Hike, Mini Putt Challenge, Horseshoe Tournament, Children's Playground & Saturday Night BBQ Turkey Pot Luck Supper.  Presenters for 2009 include -         Heather Theijsmeijer, Education Coordinator, Canadian Astronomical Society (CASCA) on "IA 2009:Canada Looks to the Skies"  and Klaus Peltsch, Astronomy Professor, Algoma University on "An Update on the Search for Extra Solar EarthlikePlanets"

MACMAN 

 

THE sixth ANNUAL MACKINAC/MANITOULIN

The ‘MacMan’ is a competitive racing/cruising event that offers a spinnaker/genniker division for serious competitors, a white sail class for those who don’t want the fuss of a spinnaker and a double handed class for those couples or friends who are into the added challenge  
The event starts on the beautiful shores of Mackinac Island, the U.S. gateway to the North Channel at the Mackinac Island Yacht Club. The start with the Grand Hotel in the background is enough to inspire any crew. The first stop is the beautiful port of Gore Bay Canada where you can explore the natural beauty of the area and end your first port day with a fresh fish dinner and a few libations to celebrate your progress.

The next day will find you heading to the finish line in Little Current. You will sail among the beautiful islands of the North Channel competing with your fellow sailors and new friends for the ultimate overall trophy. Little Current offers more fun and games as well as a great awards dinner celebration.

to benefit Manitoulin Streams.

at the Providence Bay Fair.

For Submissions:

All work must revolve around the theme of freshwater.

This includes lakes, streams, creeks, rivers and ponds.

Eight Categories: Oil, Acrylic, Pastel, Watercolour, Mixed Media,

Coloured Pencil and Drawing, Photography, Sculpture.

A $20.00 entry fee for three entries. All works must be for sale

 and there is a commission on sold items.
