De-ba-jeh-mu-jig Theatre Group - known to friends and patrons as simply "Debaj" is Canada's oldest touring Aboriginal theatre company. Founded in 1984 by Sundance Institute alumnus and award-winning filmmaker Shirley Cheechoo, De-ba-jeh-mu-jig which means "storytellers" has provided a forum for storytelling from an Aboriginal perspective. Over the years, Debaj has cultivated a number of emerging Aboriginal playwrights, such as Tomson Highway and Drew Hayden Taylor, and provided a stage with which to tell their stories stories that were performed by Aboriginal youth for Aboriginal youth. Each summer Debaj offers a main stage production at the historic Mission Ruins in Wikwemikong from late July through mid-August.

Every Thursday night in July and August, Gordon's Park offers a program that includes an orientation into astronomy, preview of astrophotography pictures, detailed review of astronomy posters on planets, northern lights and solar systems, as well as instructions on the use of a planisphere to find objects in the night sky. Participants willlearn how to star hop, view with the naked eye and have the opportunity to try Bausch & Lomb wide-angle binoculars and observe through the park's 8" Dobsonian telescope.

JULY 5, 12, 19, 26 & AUGUST 2, 9, 16, 23            

    "Walk A Fossil Reef" Sunday Afternoons

 Join us for an exciting & educational "Walk a Fossil Reef" every Sunday afternoon during July & August at Gordon's Park with palaeontologist and Algoma University professor, Sharron Valli.  Discover and see actual fossils on the reef including invertebrate corals [tabulates (colonial) and rugose (solitary)], stromatoporoids, bryozoans, and echinoderms (crinoids), mulluscs (nautiloids, bivalves, gastropods, cephalopods), brachiopods, echinoderms (crinoids) and MORE.  The park is located on Drumlin and is a featured stop in the University of Waterloo's book "Manitoulin Rocks".

    Moonlight Hike & Wolf Howl

 Gordon's Park Moonlight Hike & Wolf Howl includes calling for wolves an an educational guided nature hike with a focus on wolves and their habitat.  Participants will use Parabolic Ears and Bausch & Lomb binoculars to hunt for evidence of wolves, wolf tracks and other signs of wildlife.  A social wolf howling  competition around the campfire with really great "wolfy" prizes follows the hike.

JULY 11 & 12, 2009          

    Drum Making Weekend

 Learn the technique and culture of traditional drum making over the course of two days with instructor Lori Sagle.  This weekend includes campsite accommodations (B&B, Tipi Tenting, Camping Cabins also available) and all the necessary materials to make your very own deerhide drum.  Additional package activities include access to the solar heated swimming pool, nature interpretive centre and educational hiking trails.

July 16, 2009

The Pioneer Museum in Mindemoya

In conjunction with Jack's Agricultural Museum is having a special PIONEER CRAFTS DAY on Thursday, July 16, 2009 with activities such as "Make your own bowl on the potter's wheel", "Make a Beeswax Candle", "Knit a Potholder", "Make Flowers out of Ribbons", and more.  There will be demonstrations of spinning, weaving and other crafts, pony rides, square dancing and more.

The Pioneer Museum is open Monday - Friday, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. throughout July and August in 2009.


JULY 17 - 21, 2009          

    Stargazing Manitoulin

Excellent Star Party held in the RASC designated dark sky preserve at Gordon's Park with 360 degree viewing, no light pollution and the darkest skies in Ontario.  Activities include a Campfire Welcome Reception, Public Observing Sessions, Laser Guided Sky Tours, guest speakers, swap meet, show & tell session, Nature Interpretive Centre, Guided Fossil Hike, Mini Putt Challenge, Horseshoe Tournament, Children's Playground & Saturday Night BBQ Turkey Pot Luck Supper.  Presenters for 2009 include -         Heather Theijsmeijer, Education Coordinator, Canadian Astronomical Society (CASCA) on "IA 2009:Canada Looks to the Skies"  and Klaus Peltsch, Astronomy Professor, Algoma University on "An Update on the Search for Extra Solar EarthlikePlanets"

THE sixth ANNUAL MACKINAC/MANITOULIN

The ‘MacMan’ is a competitive racing/cruising event that offers a spinnaker/genniker division for serious competitors, a white sail class for those who don’t want the fuss of a spinnaker and a double handed class for those couples or friends who are into the added challenge  
The event starts on the beautiful shores of Mackinac Island, the U.S. gateway to the North Channel at the Mackinac Island Yacht Club. The start with the Grand Hotel in the background is enough to inspire any crew. The first stop is the beautiful port of Gore Bay Canada where you can explore the natural beauty of the area and end your first port day with a fresh fish dinner and a few libations to celebrate your progress.

The next day will find you heading to the finish line in Little Current. You will sail among the beautiful islands of the North Channel competing with your fellow sailors and new friends for the ultimate overall trophy. Little Current offers more fun and games as well as a great awards dinner celebration.

Johnny, originally from Scotland, immigrated to Toronto as a young lad finding his way to music in his late teenage years. Johnny now makes his home in Nashville but still feels very Canadian at heart. His powerful performance will be sure to knock your socks off. Manitoulin Country Fest is proud to present the top selling Canadian artist in 2008 – Johnny Reid.

Michelle brings years of experience to the stage in a performance that is sure to leave you wanting more. She has entertained hundreds of thousands of people since winning her first CCMA Female Vocalist of the Year award in 1990 to her first SOCAN songwriting award for Surrender in 2001 to entertaining the Canadian forces in Afghanistan in 2006. Michelle, originally from Ontario, now makes her home in Nashville.

Manitoulin Country Fest is excited to have Chris Thorsteinson, Dave Wasyliw and Murray Pulver – Doc Walker grace our stage. The guys hail from Portage La Prairie, just outside Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Carroll, in her Thanks for the Memories retirement tour will take fans down memory lane of decades of entertaining. Carroll, as always, will entertain the crowds, both young and old. Don’t be surprised to see Carroll kick off her shoes and keep you on the edge of your seats from start to finish. Welcome back Carroll!

Crystal Gage is excited to return to Manitoulin and especially for Manitoulin Country Fest.  Crystal splits her time between Windsor, Ontario and Nashville, Tennessee.  A performer since she was 8 years old, Crystal won CMT Karaoke Star I and now concentrates full time on her music.  She is a fan favourite enjoying full interaction with the audience.

Most recently you can see Alex as she is featured as part of the Ontario Tourism campaign.  Manitoulin Country Fest is thrilled to welcome Alex to her second "home".

Jo Hikk has been cutting their musical teeth in Alberta playing festivals and rodeos for several years.  2007 saw a CCMA nomination for Rising Star.  2008 saw Jo Hikk opening for Sara Evans and Tanya Tucker and working in studio with Canadian great George Canyon!  The band shares a Sudbury/Manitoulin connection.

Larry Berrio will be performing on the secondary stage at Manitoulin Country Fest.  Larry is making his way in the Canadian country music scene after 15 years of touring.  This year Larry will open 2 shows for Brooks & Dunn and also a show for Canadian superstar Terri Clark.  The organizers of Manitoulin Country Fest are honored to have Larry joining us this year.
